The Surface and Profound Meanings of the Quran: Eternal Guidance Across Eras
People who are firmly committed to the absolute belief that the Quran is the word of Allah deeply contemplate (tefekkür) and strive to understand it while they read. However, those who read it without accepting its divine origin, simply for the sake of reading, fall into the error of accepting the verses exactly as they first appear on the surface, as the definitive word of Allah.
Yet, Surah Al-A'raf, Verse 32 states: 'Thus do We explain the signs in detail for those with knowledge.' The profound meaning derived from this verse is that the Quran contains layers of understanding that can be truly grasped only by learned individuals who are experts in knowledge within each separate era.
This means that no single human being can comprehend the entirety of the Quran at a single glance. The necessary conclusion from this is that the Quran will never grow old or become outdated until the Day of Judgment (Qiyamah). New depths of meaning will continue to emerge in every era, and this dynamic process will continue until the end of time.
In this regard, it is true that the verses are multi-semantic. However, because the needs and requirements of each age are different, the specific verses that exert their influence on a particular era may also differ. Thus, every verse and every surah within the miracle of the Quran baştan sona (from beginning to end) profoundly impacts a specific period.
Making light of or showing disrespect to such a miraculous book is, from this perspective, a profound wrong. This is precisely why reading the Quran is not merely reading 'a book among books.'
Please, from now on, let us not let the Dhikr (remembrance) of Allah fall from our lips, even when we are merely passing by the Quran. Perhaps, through this mindfulness, we may be among those who are shown mercy.
